According to forecasts, electricity production from renewable energies will increase by almost 90 percent between 2023 and 2030. And the share of renewable energies in global electricity generation is expected to rise from around 30% at present to 46% by the end of the decade. This will naturally have an impact on the demand for copper for infrastructure and silver for photovoltaic cells. For example, the use of copper in homes in the USA increased from 120 kilograms in 1970 to 200 kilograms in 1996. In 1950, around ten kilograms of copper were used in car production; by 1996, the figure had risen to 19 kilograms. Electric cars contain between 25 and 40 kilograms of copper.

Copper is durable, corrosion-resistant, a good conductor, can withstand high temperatures and has an antibacterial effect. Even the Romans used copper to build water pipes. Smart cities and digitalization are also driving the demand for copper. Silver is also a metal that modern technologies need, be it electromobility or the photovoltaic industry. But silver can do much more and is a jack-of-all-trades. For example, scientists have developed a wearable silver network that can help patients cope with pain. It reacts to pain and responds with electrical impulses, similar to nerves.

Health monitoring systems could benefit from this and even robotic systems could be improved so that they work better with humans. Investors are interested in the world’s increasing silver and copper consumption when investing in mining companies.
