Various countries want to move away from coal and rely on environmentally friendly nuclear power. In addition to the USA, where 20 percent of CO2 emissions are caused by coal-fired power plants, this also includes China. The number one country in terms of coal consumption and greenhouse gas production wants to achieve climate neutrality by 2060. China currently has 57 nuclear power plants in operation and 28 are currently under construction. Among the Europeans, Poland is at the forefront of countries that want to replace coal with nuclear power. And they are looking at locations where coal-fired power plants are currently located. In the USA, a study has now examined whether it is feasible and sensible to build nuclear reactors on the sites of coal-fired power plants. The advantages would be the preservation of jobs, the continued use of existing infrastructure and the achievement of climate targets. According to estimates, around 128 to 174 GW of new nuclear power could be built on the sites of decommissioned coal-fired power plants in the USA by 2035.

And not only the achievement of climate targets, but also economic and ecological benefits are on the horizon. Costs can be saved if nuclear power plants are built at former coal-fired power plant sites, namely around 15 to 35 percent compared to new builds at other locations. The "coal-to-nuclear" conversion not only provides the aforementioned benefits, but would also mean grid stability. Even if these considerations are still dreams of the future, nuclear power is clean, always available and has shed its negative image.
