Few technical developments have succeeded in penetrating so many areas of life and symbolizing the advantages of technological progress on so many levels as the LED. Today, there is hardly any application in which the LED has not already largely replaced classic incandescent bulbs or fluorescent tubes. Size, performance, service life, resilience, and energy consumption are compelling arguments for why LEDs can now be found everywhere from televisions and cars to wearables and, above all, in industry, wherever efficient light sources are needed. For product developers, this means that the use of LED components or even just bare dies is an essential part of the design. Fundamental characteristics and properties, such as available space and thermal conductivity, must be carefully considered in the development process.

Chips 4 Light acts as partner

As a distributor, Chips 4 Light is one of the few qualified partners in Europe for a broad market with a demand for optoelectronic components in small and medium quantities. As a market partner between internationally renowned manufacturers for LED chips and product developers, as well as customers from a wide range of industries, Chips 4 Light is the ideal contact for a wide variety of projects.

As a distributor, Chips 4 Light offers its customers the opportunity to purchase LED chips in the required quantities with a wide range of characteristics as pure semiconductors on wafers for their own further processing.

However, Chips 4 Light also has the necessary expertise and equipment, including controlled conditions at almost clean room level, to transfer LED chips in individual quantities from the mother wafer to customer-specific carriers such as foil, gel or waffle packs. For this purpose, wafer mappings provided by the manufacturer – the technical specifications (substrate mapping) of the individual LED chips on a wafer – are uploaded into the sorting equipment and then sorted.
If the mapping is not available, Chips 4 Light will, upon request, carry out the characterization itself by measuring the LED chips on the mother wafer. As a result, customer-specific selections and quantities can be provided.

Chips 4 Light supports flexibility and long-term competitive strategies

In addition to on-demand supply, Chips 4 Light offers an additional service with the long-term storage of LED chips, which enables even smaller companies to competitively exploit the full potential of working with modern LED chips. As a climate-controlled storage system, Chips 4 Light uses dry storage cabinets to store optoelectronic components at less than 1% humidity, protecting them from aging due to environmental influences and thus keeping them permanently available for on-demand retrieval. In this way, Chips 4 Light effectively ensures long-term supply security and enables its customers to enjoy maximum flexibility in project design for years into the future. External storage supports just-in-time production strategies and saves companies the necessary investments in individual and specially required warehouse logistics and infrastructure.

Chips 4 Light as a comprehensive competent partner
In addition to its role as a distributor, with customer-oriented services related to the supply of components tailored to customer needs, Chips 4 Light actively supports product development.

In addition to characterizing and sorting LED chips, Chips 4 Light also offers services in the areas of development, simulation, and assembly and bonding technology (die bonding and wire bonding). The range of services is rounded off by the option of prototype and small-batch production. Chips 4 Light thus supports product manufacturers in the design of all types of miniaturized light sources and the implementation in demanding applications.

“We are one of the few specialists in Europe that offers such a comprehensive range of services related to the supply and development of optoelectronic components, thereby appealing to a broad market while also giving companies purchasing small and medium quantities access to state-of-the-art technologies,” explains Dr. Wolfgang Huber, Managing Director of Chips 4 Light GmbH. “With this claim, we invest specifically in know-how and equipment, which we make available to our customers in our services.”
