The recent past is not the only evidence of how highly sought-after gold and silver are. And the fact that gold and silver are imperishable can be seen in ancient treasures that are coming to light again. It was recently revealed that an illegal metal detectorist found an ancient Roman treasure in Germany but did not report it until eight years later. The approximately 450 silver coins date back to the time when the Roman Republic collapsed and emperors ruled. Incidentally, the world’s largest gold treasure is believed to be located in a Spanish galleon off the coast of Colombia, worth US$17 billion, but not easy to recover. The wreck contains more than 500 tons of gold coins, silver coins, and emeralds. And in Florida, there is a stretch of coastline called Treasure Coast. This was an important route for the Spanish, who used it to bring gold and silver from plundered colonies to Europe. Many sank, including a fleet of eleven ships from the Spanish silver fleet. Over 1,000 coins have been and are still being recovered from the bottom of the sea.
Despite the decline in the price of gold – which was actually only about the gains made in October – hardly anyone would deny the strong interest in the precious metal. According to the World Gold Council, demand for gold reached a record high in the third quarter. ETF inflows and coin and bar purchases were extremely high. Central banks and other institutions purchased around 28 percent more gold than in the previous quarter. And the strong interest in safe havens is likely to remain, as the factors driving the gold price have not suddenly disappeared, but continue to exist.
