Friction is omnipresent. External friction between contacting outer surfaces of solids occurs, for example, in the rolling resistance of vehicles or in the abrasion of mechanical connections. Internal friction occurs during deformation processes within solids, liquids, and gases, acting between neighboring particles.
Typical of all friction processes is the generation of heat, which can be made visible and measurable using thermography. High-resolution thermal IR cameras allow even the smallest temperature differences or temperature gradients to be determined – even in fast processes. They can not only be used to monitor mechanical wear processes (machine health), but also to detect crack formation or determine material strength.
In addition to tribological measurements, friction processes can be comprehensively analyzed by means of thermography in terms of their quality and quantity. This contributes, for example, to understanding the behavior of lubricating oils up to the point of film breakage or the deformation-mechanical properties of material composites under tensile and compressive stress.
The InfraTec infrared sensor and measurement technology company was founded in 1991 and has its headquarters in Dresden, Germany. The privately held company employs more than 240 employees and has its own design, manufacturing and distribution capabilities.
With its infrared measurement business unit, InfraTec is one of the leading suppliers of commercial thermal imaging technology. In addition to the high-end camera series ImageIR® and the camera series TarisIR® and VarioCAM® High Definition, InfraTec offers turnkey thermographic automation solutions e. g. for industry processes, non-destructive testing and fire detection and prevention.
The infrared sensor division produces custom-made components – especially pyroelectrical infrared detectors – for clients worldwide. The product range includes analogue single and multi-channel detectors as well as digital multi-channel detectors (PyrIQ). The detectors are used, for example, in gas analysis, fire and flame sensors and spectroscopy.
