The newly developed, grid-like BioMESH® macrocarriers are made of high-quality PP and PET mesh and represent a safe and biocompatible carrier system that has been developed to cultivate stem cells and fibroblasts as well as epithelial cells and chondrocytes. The macroporous BioMESH® carriers allow particularly efficient and low-lint recovery of the cultured cells.
Various configurations of the BelloCell® bioreactor system reflect the wide range of applications for the BioMESH® macrocarrier. Applications range from propagation of stem cells (expansion) and cell therapy applications to biomass production and cell propagation for in-vitro meat production as well as the propagation of intracellular viruses. BioMESH® macrocarriers can also be used to produce extracellular vesicles (EV)/exosomes. Furthermore, secreted bioproducts such as viruses, viral vectors and proteins can be produced using BioMESH® Macrocarriers. In addition, the BioMESH® macrocarriers are also suitable for producing secreted bioproducts such as viruses, viral vectors and proteins.
The large specific cultivation surface area of the highly porous BioMESHTM macrocarrier of 23,000 cm2 per 0.1 L bed volume in combination with the specific design of the flexible BelloCell® reactor bottles enables precisely timed, alternating exposure of the 3D cell culture to the atmosphere and the culture medium (flow tide principle). This ensures an optimum supply of nutrients and oxygen to the immobilized cells during cultivation while at the same time minimising mechanical stress.
Using the optional BelloFeeder® pump module and standard media bottles as external reservoirs, the bioreactor can easily be converted into a continuous reactor system.
