Neurosurgery and spinal surgery are among the most complex challenges in modern medicine. Technical advances in imaging, navigation and system networking are not only changing surgical practice, but also the requirements for support systems in the operating room. In order to ensure reliable intraoperative monitoring with the AVALANCHE® PLUS neuromonitoring system, Dr. Langer Medical GmbH was looking for particularly robust and powerful system components that would meet the high demands of everyday clinical practice. The following user report shows which solution was used and what experiences were made during implementation.

Project description

Neuromonitor for measuring and controlling neuronal signals

The IPC-based all-in-one system AVALANCHE® PLUS was specially developed for highly complex applications in neurosurgery and spinal surgery. The focus was on a user-friendly interface that can be configured and operated intuitively and visually. Important parameters can be presented clearly on the 21.5-inch touchscreen using drag & drop and then conveniently exported as a PDF for documentation purposes. Clear color and shape coding as well as LED signals in combination with continuous signal monitoring support the operating personnel in setting and checking the electrode contacts.

For a better overview, irrelevant modalities can be hidden and frequently used measurement arrangements can be saved in quick access. Once the procedure is complete, the REPORT-ASSIST guides the user step by step through the documentation right up to the finished report. In this way, the AVALANCHE® PLUS system focuses on the essentials so that the surgical staff can devote their full attention to the procedure.

The challenge

Powerful hardware solutions in intraoperative neuromonitoring
Intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM) is an established procedure in modern surgery that is used to precisely identify, monitor and document nerve structures at risk during surgical procedures. This highly sensitive technology makes a crucial contribution to patient safety in the operating room and therefore places the highest demands on precision and system reliability. Dr. Langer Medical was looking for a durable and powerful combination for the two core components of the motherboard and power supply of the IPC-based AVALANCHE® PLUS system, which are optimally matched to each other and comply with the latest medical certifications. In addition to technical quality, short delivery times, comprehensive design-in advice and direct access to competent support specialists played a key role in safeguarding both the development process and the long-term operation of the system.

The solution

Power+Board Bundle for system security and optimal function

Bicker Elektronik has extensive know-how and, in addition to high-quality power supplies, also offers Power+Board bundles with an extensive product range of system components. In close cooperation with Dr. Langer Medical, a tailor-made solution was found that meets the defined requirements and prioritized criteria. The selected Power+Board bundle consists of the contact-cooled BICKER BEO-3012MC medical power supply unit and the K3832-Q industrial motherboard. The optimally coordinated combination offers a stable and long-term available hardware basis for neuromonitoring.

Medical AC/DC power supply unit BEO-3012MC

The BEO-3012MC is a compact and high-quality AC/DC switching power supply with a precisely regulated 12 V DC output for fanless power supply, which is crucial in sensitive medical environments in particular. The particularly energy-efficient power supply unit impresses with its high efficiency of up to 94% and extremely low standby power consumption of less than 0.3 watts. Thanks to its robust and high-quality construction, the power supply unit is designed for continuous operation around the clock and works trouble-free in an extended temperature range of -40 °C to +70 °C. The BEO-3012MC also meets the international safety requirements for medical technology in accordance with IEC60601-1:2005+A1:2012 (Edition 3.1), EN60601-1:2006+A1:2013 (Edition 3.1) and ANSI/AAMI ES60601-1:2005 (3rd Edition). The high insulation voltage of 6516 VDC between input and output meets the requirements of the 2xMOPP (Means of Patient Protection) medical safety standard for patient contact.

High-performance mITX motherboard Kontron K3832-Q

The power supply is complemented by the powerful Kontron K3832-Q industrial motherboard, a high-performance mITX board “Made in Germany” that currently supports Intel® Core™ processors up to the 14th generation. The motherboard not only impresses with its computing power, but also with a comprehensive range of interfaces that enable the connection of a wide variety of peripheral devices. In addition, the board supports the latest DDR5 memory technology, which offers fast data processing and high system efficiency.
