The question is how many ounces of gold or silver can be purchased for one ounce of platinum. The main reason why platinum has not performed so well in terms of price is primarily due to its use in the automotive industry (catalytic converters for diesel engines). Since 2007, less platinum has been used in the automotive industry because diesel vehicles are no longer sold as frequently. The average amount of platinum used in a vehicle has also fallen. Only about five percent of gold is used in industry; it is primarily an investment metal. Silver is used today in batteries and solar modules.
But now platinum is increasingly coming into focus as an investment metal for investors. If hydrogen technology takes off, this will create potential for platinum. This is because hydrogen fuel cells require platinum in their production. In any case, platinum prices rose by almost 50 percent in 2025. And since gold has become enormously more expensive, the global market for platinum jewelry is growing, especially in China, India, Japan, the US, and the United Arab Emirates, according to the Platinum Guild International in its latest report (Platinum Jewelry Business Review). In the search for high-quality jewelry at affordable prices, platinum jewelry is now experiencing a renaissance.
Year-on-year, the Chinese market for platinum jewelry rose by a whopping 151 percent. Gold, silver, and platinum are precious metals whose prices are a source of joy for mining companies such as Sibanye-Stillwater and Sierra Madre Gold and Silver.
