The popularity of fortified gummies has exploded in recent years as consumers eschew conventional pill and capsule-based supplement formats in favour of soft and chewy ‘candyceuticals’. According to data from Innova Market Insights, gummy supplements accounted for 9.4% of global supplement launches in 2021 – an increase of 70% since 2017, and between 2020 to 2021 alone, the number of gummy supplement launches globally rocketed by 81%.^[1]

In addition to the whopping 61% increase in the vastus medialis (the teardrop-shaped muscle in the front of the upper thigh), those who took collagen peptides experienced the total volume of their strength-trained quadriceps increase by a significant 38% more compared to the placebo group.

The randomised, double-blind control trial, published in the Journal Acta Physiologica, is the first to use state-of-the-art high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to ascertain that bioactive collagen peptides can significantly increase muscle size. Here, researchers also employed ultrasound to detect changes in muscle architecture. These ultrasound images revealed a significant improvement in the angle of the muscle fibres, indicating a positive, systematic effect of the collagen peptide supplements on muscle remodelling after resistance training.

“Over time, greater hypertrophy would be expected to benefit improvements in function”, wrote the authors about the strength gains in light of the significant increase in quadriceps muscle volume and contractile torque found after the collagen peptide supplementation.

This study combined 10 g of BODYBALANCE® with 5 g of TENDOFORTE® bioactive collagen peptides. TENDOFORTE® – where prior studies confirmed its efficacy in improving stressed and compromised tendons and ligaments – was chosen for the proactive maintenance of healthy tendons and ligaments during resistance training.

The study confirmed the findings from three published studies performed by Universities in Germany. “Our current muscle hypertrophy results are consistent with prior studies that reported greater gains in fat-free mass for collagen peptides vs placebo during resistance training,” revealed the authors. The pioneering German studies also yielded improvements in body composition from the supplementation with GELITA’s bioactive collagen peptide BODYBALANCE^â.

For Suzane Leser, nutritionist and director of nutrition communication at GELITA, the study sponsor, “The study is an important milestone in GELITA’s research efforts to confirm the efficacy of bioactive collagen peptides for muscle growth. Der 10. Trail Marathon Heidelberg, zum zehnten Mal mit GELITA als Titelsponsor. Nicht einmal die Coronapandemie konnte der Partnerschaft zwischen GELITA und dem Trail Marathon-Veranstalter M3 etwas anhaben. 2020 und 2021 fand die Veranstaltung unter hohen Hygieneschutzauflagen statt. Am 17. und 18. September 2022, und damit ungewöhnlich früh, geht die Jubiläumsauflage des Trail Marathon an den Start. Veranstalter M3 freut sich nach den Pandemiejahren auf ein offenes Starterfeld und viele Zuschauer. Die Nachmeldung ist für alle Wertungen noch am 17. und 18. September im Start- und Zielbereich am Karlsplatz möglich.

Das Programm am Samstag, 17. September 2022

Heidelberg XTRM als Kick-off

Am Samstagmorgen, um 10:00 Uhr, wird der GELITA Trail Marathon mit Heidelberg XTRM, einem Mountainbike-Rennen der Extraklasse, eingeläutet. Das Rennen beginnt mit einem circa 7,5 Kilometer langen Crosscountry-Teil über zahlreiche Uphill Trails bis hinauf zum Königstuhl. Hier schließt sich dann eine sehr anspruchsvolle Downhill-Passage über den Tannenzäpfle-Trail und die Flowline, legale Downhill-Strecken vom HD-Freeride e. V., an. Start und Ziel befinden sich auf dem Molkenkurweg oberhalb des Heidelberger Schlosses. „Wir wollten einmal ein neues Mountainbike-Format ausprobieren, jenseits der bekannten Kategorien Downhill, Crosscountry oder All Mountain“, sagt Christian Herbert, Geschäftsführer von M3. „Wer Heidelberg XTRM gewinnen möchte, muss schnell die Berge raufkommen und sich auch nicht zu schade zu sein, das Fahrrad einmal eine Passage zu tragen. Downhill wird jeder Teilnehmer hoch konzentriert fahren müssen, wenn er vorne dabei sein will. Dieses Format ist einzigartig und wir sind gespannt, wie es bei den Mountainbikern ankommt.“, sagt Herbert.

Ausgetragen wird Heidelberg XTRM auf offiziellen Mountainbike-Strecken und legalen Downhill-Passagen von HD-Freeride e. V. Eine forstrechtliche Genehmigung liegt vor. „Heidelberg XTRM soll zeigen, dass man rund um den Königstuhl auf völlig legalen Strecken Spaß mit dem Mountainbike haben kann.“ sagt Herbert.

Die Startunterlagen werden am Samstag bereits ab 7:30 Uhr auf dem Heidelberger Karlsplatz ausgegeben. Nach dem Zieleinlauf auf dem Molkenkurweg findet die Siegerehrung mit einer kleinen Bürger-Maultaschenparty wiederrum auf dem Karlsplatz in der Heidelberger Altstadt statt.

Der Twilight Trail beendet den Tag

Schon Tradition, aber ebenfalls innovativ ist das Konzept des Twilight Trail. Am Samstagabend, um 18:00 Uhr, fällt der Startschuss für alle, die die Himmelsleiter im Dämmerlicht besiegen wollen. Über Naturstufen, Felskanten und Geröllsteine balancieren die Teilnehmer des Twilight-Trail die Himmelsleiter hinauf zum Königstuhl, und legen dabei bereits 235 Höhenmeter zurück. Dabei überwinden sie 850 Sandsteinstufen und kämpfen mit brennenden Oberschenkeln. Der Abstieg ist steinig und technisch anspruchsvoll. Dennoch eignet sich der Twilight Trail über die Himmelsleiter auch für Trail-Einsteiger.

Genauso beliebt ist der Twilight Trail für Doppelstarter. 2021 lieferten sich der spätere Sieger des Long Distance -Trail über 50 Kilometer, Pierre-Emmanuel Alexandre und der spätere Sieger des Trail Marathon, Markus Mingo, einen Kampf auf Biegen und Brechen: Das Rennen entschied sich erst auf dem asphaltierten Zielanstieg auf dem Molkenkurweg.

Favoritin bei den weiblichen Teilnehmern ist Lisa Teichert. Die mehrfache deutsche Meisterin, Weltmeisterin und Europameisterin im Quadrathlon-Sport ist jetzt in der vierten Quadrathlon- Kategorie, dem Rennkajak, unterwegs, und gewinnt auch hier Meistertitel. Sie hat die Kraft und den Willen, auf der Himmelsleiter ganz vorne dabei zu sein.

Seinen Sieg im Jahr 2021 wiederholen möchte Pierre-Emmanuel Alexandre, der auch am 17. und 18. September beim Twilight Trail und beim engelhorn sports Half-Trail als Doppelstarter fungiert. Der Sieg könnte ihm dieses Jahr leichter fallen als noch 2021 bei seinem epischen Kampf gegen Markus Mingo.

Die Laufwertungen am Sonntag, 18. September 2022

M3 Base-Trail

Zur 10. Jubiläumsauflage des GELITA Trail Marathon Heidelberg wird der M3 Base-Trail über 20 Kilometer aus der Taufe gehoben. Damit wird die Lücke zwischen dem Twilight Trail über sieben Kilometer und dem engelhorn sports Half-Trail am Sonntag über 30 Kilometer gefüllt.

Gestartet wird der M3 Base-Trail wie alle anderen Trail-Running-Wertungen am Sonntag, um 11:00 Uhr, auf dem Heidelberger Karlsplatz. Die ersten Teilnehmer des M3 Base-Trail werden bereits gegen 12:45 Uhr im Ziel erwartet.

Für den neuen M3 Base-Trail haben sich bislang 86 Läufer angemeldet.

engelhorn sports Half-Trail

Das Teilnehmerfeld des engelhorn sports Half-Trail über 30 Kilometer zählt aktuell 241 Läufer und Läuferinnen. Die Triathletin und Läuferin Katharina Grabinger vom SV Nikar Heidelberg hat die besten Chancen, ihren Sieg beim engelhorn sports Half-Trail 2021 in diesem Jahr zu wiederholen. Bei den Männern ist Half-Trail-Sieger Julian Beuchert nicht am Start. Der Heidelberger Oliver Fischer vom engelhorn sports Team TV Schriesheim könnte in die Fußstapfen von Beuchert treten. Wie Katharina Grabinger ist Oliver Fischer Triathlet und wird im Herbst beim Ironman Triathlon Hawaii teilnehmen. Sein Ticket für die Triathlon WM hat er sich schon im Frühjahr beim Ironman Barcelona erschwommen, erradelt und erlaufen. Die 30 Kilometer des engelhorn sports Half-Trail nutzt Fischer als läuferische Vorbereitung auf den kommenden Ironman. Er ist in Topform und der Sieg ist ihm zuzutrauen.

Der Weg zum Sieg geht aber nur über den Dossenheimer Pierre-Emmanuel Alexandre, der die Heidelberger Trail-Strecken wie seine eigene Westentasche kennt und in den letzten Jahren über jede Strecke des GELITA Trail Marathon schon gewonnen hat. Im Jahr 2021 siegte er über die 50 km Distanz des Salomon Long-Distance-Trail und blieb dabei nur knapp über den 4 Stunden. Er ist zurück in der Region und wird seine Trailerfahrung gegenüber Oliver Fischer ausspielen. Er hat 2022 bei einigen wichtigen Trails in seinem Heimatland Frankreich großartige Platzierungen erzielt und ist fit.

GELITA Marathon-Trail

Bei dem Trail über die Marathon-Distanz von 42 Kilometer konnte Christina Erdbrink aus Darmstadt 2021 als Erste über die Ziellinie laufen, und sie gewann auch den PfalzTrail über 36 Kilometer. 2022 geht sie erneut an den Start. Alles spricht dafür, dass sie ihren Vorjahreserfolg wiederholen kann. Bei den Herren tritt der Sieger des Marathon-Trails der Jahre 2020 und 2021, Markus Mingo vom Team XC-Run, nicht mehr an. Derzeit ist noch nicht abzusehen, wer die Lücke ausfüllen wird. Regelmäßig melden sich Top-Starter kurzfristig an, um ihre Konkurrenten im Unklaren zu lassen.

Salomon Long-Distance-Trail

Beim Salomon Long Distance-Trail über 50 Kilometer und 2.200 Höhenmeter haben die „ewigen Zweiten“ dieses Jahr die Chance, auf das oberste Treppchen zu steigen. Matthias Krah, im Vorjahr noch Zweiter hinter Pierre-Emmanuel Alexandre, kann am 18. September sein Ding machen und das Rennen über das Felsenmeer und die Himmelsleiter gewinnen. Matthias Krah war bereits bester Deutscher beim Ultra-Trail du Mont Blanc 2019 (Gesamt 16ter) und hat im März 2022 bei der Gesamtwertung des Trail du Petit Ballon einen hervorragenden sechsten Platz erreicht. Er ist immer wieder bei den großen alpinen Ultra-Trail-Events ganz vorne zu sehen und in der Lage, beim Salomon Long Distance -Trail zu brillieren.

Den Sieg streitig machen wird ihm vor allem Jens Santruschek vom Team des TV Bretten. Jens ist sowohl auf der Straße wie auch in den Bergen zu Hause und läuft nahezu jede Strecke. 2022 hat er bereits die Staffel des Challenge-Triathlons in Roth gewonnen. Bei der deutschen Meisterschaft im 50-KilometerStraßenlauf hat Jens Santruschek in diesem Jahr einen hervorragenden achten Platz erreicht und damit einen dritten Rang in seiner Altersklasse M40. „An die 50 Kilometer bin ich also bereits gewöhnt, jetzt muss ich nur noch die Höhenmeter in den Griff bekommen“, sagt Jens augenzwinkernd. Er hat das klare Ziel, den Salomon Long Distance-Trail endlich für sich zu entscheiden.

Bei den Frauen könnte 2022 endlich die Stunde von Pia Winkelblech aus Kandel schlagen. Dreimal war sie bereits über die 50 Kilometer am Start, dreimal wurde sie Zweite. „Der Salomon Long Distance-Trail beim GELITA Trail Marathon Heidelberg ist für mich einer der schönsten Trails, die ich kenne. Die Strecke ist unheimlich abwechslungsreich, führt durch das superschöne Heidelberg, über den Philosophenweg, die Thingstätte und das Felsenmeer. Besonders interessant wird das Rennen dann, wenn bei circa Kilometer 42 die Himmelsleiter zu bezwingen ist. Eine vergleichbare Herausforderung kenne ich bei anderen Trails nicht“, sagt Pia. Nach ihrer Teilnahme mit der Deutschen Nationalmannschaft bei der 100-Kilometer-Weltmeisterschaft in Berlin im August muss sich Pia allerdings erst wieder auf die Berge einstellen und regenerieren. „Eine gute Platzierung beim Salomon Long Distance-Trail wird davon abhängen, wie gut ich mich bereits von den Strapazen der 100-Kilometer-Weltmeisterschaft erholt habe“, sagt die deutsche Ultrameisterin von 2018 und 2019.

Kurzfristig in die Starterliste eingetragen hat sich jedoch nun auch die Vorjahressiegerin, Juliane Rössler von der TG Viktoria Augsburg, die alles tun wird, um ihren Titel zu verteidigen. Und auch die Drittplatzierte des GELITA Marathon-Trails 2021, Sarah Ziem vom SV Nikar Heidelberg wird auf die Ultra-Strecke gehen, genau wie die nicht zu unterschätzende Daniela Kenty aus Weinheim, der eine Platzierung auf dem Podium jederzeit zuzutrauen ist. Es wird also ein äußerst spannendes Rennen geben.

M3 Trail Challenge – wer wird der „Chairmen (m/w/d)“?

Ebenfalls ganz neu ist die M3 Trail Challenge, bei der es darum geht, „Chairman“ zu werden. Teilnehmen können Läufer und Biker, die am Samstag beim Mountainbike-Rennen Heidelberg XTRM mitfahren und am Sonntag den Base-Trail laufen. Die Platzierungen werden zusammengerechnet und ein Gesamtsieger gekürt – der „Chairman“. Er ist der Sieger und sitzt auf „The Kings Chair“, dem Königstuhl.

Nachmeldungen auf dem Karlsplatz

Kurzentschlossene können sich für alle Laufwertungen am Veranstaltungswochenende auf dem Karlsplatz (Samstag von 7:30 Uhr bis 19 Uhr, Sonntag ab 8:00 Uhr bis 10:30 Uhr) nachmelden.

Beste Voraussetzungen für Zuschauer

Nachdem in den Coronajahren Zuschauer auf dem Karlsplatz aus Hygieneschutzgründen nicht gestattet waren, freut sich das Organisationsteam des Veranstalters M3 auf möglichst viele Fans im Start- und Zielbereich und auf der gesamten Strecke. „Schöne Punkte zum Anfeuern sind die Alte Brücke, der Philosophenweg, die Thingstätte, die Wechselzone der Duo- Marathonis am Langen Kirschbaum, die Brücke über den Steinbach beim MSC Ziegelhausen, Stift Neuburg, die Ziegelhäuser Brücke und natürlich der Königstuhl“, sagt Projektleiterin Anika Jäger vom M3-Orga-Team. „Auch im Start- und Zielbereich am Karlsplatz möchten wir natürlich möglichst viele begeisterte Angehörige und Fans sehen“, so Jäger weiter. „Nur im Naturschutzgebiet Felsenmeer bitten wir darum, dass die Läufer allein gelassen werden und keine Zuschauer die Trail-Runner anfeuern, damit die Flora und Fauna dort maximal geschützt wird“, betont Jäger.

Keine Verkehrsbeschränkungen zu erwarten

„Der GELITA Trail Marathon ist seit seiner ersten Austragung im Jahr 2013 immer verkehrsfreundlicher geworden“, sagt Christian Herbert. Im Zentrum von Heidelberg kommt es nur in der Zeit zwischen 11.00 Uhr und 11.30 Uhr zu einer kurzen Sperrung der Ziegelhäuser Landstraße zwischen Alter Brücke und Schleuse. „Durch die Streckenänderung, die wir 2019 eingeführt haben, wird Ziegelhausen nicht mehr vom GELITA Trail Marathon berührt; die Ziegelhäuser Brücke bleibt vollständig offen, nur im Bereich des Brückenkopfes auf der Schlierbacher Seite müssen die Autos ab und zu einen Läufer vorbeilassen“, sagt Christian Herbert und erwartet auch in diesem Punkt eine reibungslose Veranstaltung.
