With over 28,000 participants from all over the world, as well as around 500 non-governmental organisations and more than 1,500 journalists, the UN Climate Change Conference in Bonn is Germany’s biggest ever international summit. The conference is being presided over by the Republic of Fiji with support from Germany as the host country. Bonn’s existing conference facilities were not designed to cater for an event of this magnitude, so a series of temporary halls and marquees have been erected as a venue. The result of the work, carried out since August, is a conference city spanning a total area of 55,000 square metres, consisting of the ‘Bonn Zone’ in Bonn’s Rheinaue district and the ‘Bula Zone’ near the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Bonn World Conference Centre (WorldCCBonn). Bula means ‘welcome’ in Fijian. The Bonn Zone is the venue for all the climate campaign activities and presentations. The temporary conference city is home to the exhibition pavilions for participating nations and various exhibition areas.

The RÖDER Group was commissioned by leading Hamburg agency Vagedes & Schmid to install a huge complex of tents in the ‘Bula” zone on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMUB).
The complex spans a total area of more than 21,000 square meters, 6,000 of which are two-floor structures. The tents are available for delegates, visitors and participants to use for conferences and presentations. In the lead-up to the event, 180 truckloads delivered 2,000 tons of material to Bonn. A team of 40 fitters, project and site managers erected 70 tent and hall systems in the span of just 12 weeks, with structures ranging from the small HIGHLIGHT party tent to the SOLUTION two-storey event halls. Nine stairways and one lift were installed in the SOLUTION event halls to ensure easy, accessible access to both floors. In addition to a medical centre and a media area, this nine-metre-high complex also houses a two-storey catering area that can accommodate 1,500 people at once. The side wings of the venue consist of RÖDER party tents and marquees, where a series of small and larger rooms are available for presentations and press conferences.

The UN World Climate Conference in Bonn is setting new standards for environmentally friendly events. The event aims to use recycled, recyclable or reusable materials wherever possible. This covers everything from the temporary structures and conference materials to name tags and water bottles. Over 95 suppliers and service providers involved in the climate summit are required to agree to a COP23 sustainability code based on an existing UN code of conduct. All environmental impacts of the event are being analysed as part of the Eco Management Audit Scheme certification scheme (EMAS for short), and adverse environmental consequences are to be minimised wherever possible.

As a sustainable enterprise, the RÖDER Group is the right partner for this major event. The tent and hall systems boast modular, resource-efficient structures and employ reusable components and recyclable materials, making them the perfect choice for sustainable events. The RÖDER Group has been impressing clients for decades with its solutions for large trade fairs and international sports events such as Formula 1, the Summer and Winter Olympics Games and world championships in all sorts of disciplines.

The RÖDER Group is certified in accordance with DIN EN ISO 14001, a certification it has held for years. As part of its efforts to promote sustainable development, the Group is constantly improving its environmental impact and soon expects to be awarded EMAS certification.
