MSC Technologies, the technology brand of Avnet Integrated Solutions, presents the MSC SM2S-IMX8M SMARC 2.0™ module, which integrates the current 64-bit i.MX8M ARM® Cortex™-A53 processor from NXP, at the embedded world 2018. The powerful module features low power consumption of 3 to 6 watts with very high compute and graphics performance.

The i.MX8M SoC integrates a dual- or quad-core ARM Cortex-A53 with up to 1.5GHz, an ARM Cortex-M4 real-time processor, the Vivante GC7000Lite 3D graphics processor and peripherals. Thanks to its excellent audio, voice and video performance, the Computer-On-Module (COM) is suitable for use in industrial automation and visualization systems, infotainment applications in vehicles, access controls and building automation. The board is designed for the full industrial temperature range from -40°C to +85°C.

The compact MSC SM2S-IMX8M module with dimensions of 82 mm x 50 mm provides up to 4GB LPDDR4 SDRAM and up to 64GB eMMC Flash memory for program and data storage. The wide range of standard interfaces includes Gigabit Ethernet, PCI Express, USB 3.0 and USB 2.0, UART, SPI and I²S Audio. Optionally, CAN and an on-board wireless module are available. Two MIPI CSI-2 interfaces can be used as camera input. Up to two independent high resolution displays can be connected to the HDMI 2.0 and dual channel LVDS graphic interfaces. The LVDS connection with up to 1920 x 1080 pixels can be split into two separate channels. This would make it possible to even control up to three displays with different contents. A DisplayPort 1.3a interface can be supported as an alternative to HDMI 2.0 and MIPI DSI instead of LVDS.

The MSC SM2-MB-EP1 development platform in Mini-ITX form factor and a starter kit are available from MSC for evaluation and quickly starting up the module. In addition, Board Support Packages for Linux and, on request, for Android are available.

MSC Technologies will offer the complete i.MX8 processor family, consisting of i.MX8QuadMax, i.MX8M and i.MX8X variants on the SMARC 2.0™ form factor and i.MX8QuadMax on the Qseven™ form factor. At the same time, MSC Technologies will continue to support and expand its highly successful MSC SM2S-IMX6 SMARC 2.0 module family, based on NXP’s i.MX6 processor.
