MSC Technologies, the technology brand of Avnet Integrated Solutions, has added H&D Wireless’s (Sweden) powerful SPB228 Wi-Fi/Bluetooth Combo Module and will present the SPB228 module as well as MSC SMARC module with fully integrated SPB228 module at Embedded World.  This brand new module is supporting dual-frequency 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac with 2×2 Multi User MiMo as well as Bluetooth 5.0 Dual Mode. With its compact dimensions of 16 x 12 mm in a M.2 1216 solderable form factor and its extended operating temperature range of -40 to +85 0C it is ideally fitting to various high-end applications. Based on Marvell’s 88W8997 also longevity can be guaranteed.

The SPB228 is supporting 802.11ac with various Modulation and Coding Schemes like for MCS0 – MCS9, VHT20 up to VHT80 and BPSK, CCK, QPSK, 16QAM, 64QAM, 256QAM modulation for WLAN, which is enabling data rates up to 866.7 Mbit/s by using the 2×2 Multi-User MiMo RF interface. Bluetooth 5 is supporting as well Bluetooth classic as also LE functionality with simultaneous operation with Wi-Fi. The coexistence is supported with Bluetooth but also with LTE.

With integrated RF, baseband/MAC, Bluetooth package engine, RF filters and Oscillator it is highly integrated. The module is host controlled with Linux OS support. The host interface supports USB 3.0, SDIO as well as PCIe. More hardware interfaces are supported like PCM audio and others. Also the radio interface is performing excellent with receiver sensitivity up to
-98 dB m and transceiver output power of max. +16 dBm assuring a reliable radio range.

Due to the modern chip technology a low power consumption even in transceiver mode could be achieved, like 350 mA in 2.4 GHz 802.11 /b mode (1 Mbps).

Security is guaranteed with WEP and WPA/WPA2 encryption and Wi-Fi direct as well as simultaneous use of the SoftAP and Station mode is possible.

MSC did a full integration of this module on its new SMARC 2.0 MSC SM2S-ZUSP and MSC SM2S-IMX8M modules. All main functions are fully supported and the board support package is already including the drivers.

For rapid system integration, reference designs and evaluation tools are available.
