Over the past few years, there has been a shift in the dental implant market. There are now more dentists with less experience within implantology and a generation shift with different expectations is coming. Clinicians are facing more complex decisions as there is an increase in patients with risk factors and as demands for shorter treatment times are rising. Protocols and techniques are being redefined to accommodate the benefits of digital planning and workflows. There is thus a need for an objective tool to increase efficiency, and to guide and optimize the implant treatment for both complex and more straight-forward cases, making ISQ diagnostics all the more necessary, as an objective key value to improve outcomes and assure quality.

Osstell, the company that developed the ISQ technology, now takes the next leap in the evolution of implant diagnostics with the introduction of the Osstell Beacon, an innovative and highly intuitive tool designed to guide implant treatments for more predictable results. We sat down with Mr. Jonas Ehinger, CEO Osstell, Mr. Stefan Horn, VP Product Solutions Osstell and Dr. Marcus Dagnelid, CEO Dagnelidklinken to hear their thoughts on the Osstell approach and the new product Osstell Beacon.

Could you please tell us a bit more about this new product? What was the thinking behind developing the Osstell Beacon?

Mr. Ehinger: The Osstell Beacon is a natural step for us as part of the Osstell approach. It is a way for us to cater to a different segment of the market and a different use of our technology. Although it is also designed to work in combination with our other products and services, such as OsstellConnect and the Osstell IDx.

Mr. Horn: We needed a complement to the more comprehensive Osstell IDx to meet the needs from different dental clinics globally, both large University clinics and small private practices.

In the industry today, there is a lot of talk about connectivity, Internet of Things, Big data. We perform more and more tasks with our Smartphones and tablets, which puts greater demands on products to be intuitive and practical to use. Our design goal was therefore to make the Beacon highly intuitive, practical and extremely easy to use to guide the ISQ measurements.

With the big data discussion also comes the strong focus on not only capturing the data, but also to be able to turn it into something useful and insightful. That’s why we are continuously focusing on enhancing connectivity and OsstellConnect, as we believe it will only become more and more valuable for the clinicians.

What are the main benefits of the Osstell Beacon for clinicians?

Dr. Dagnelid: When you work in a large clinical setting as I do, there are a lot of doctors with different levels of experience when it comes to working with implant dentistry, including GPs and referring doctors. I believe that there has been a gap that the Osstell Beacon now can fill because it’s so intuitive and easy to use, and perhaps also speaks to newcomers to the method. The fact that it also collects the data that guides us and builds our quality assurance is also a huge benefit.

In my setting I will use it as, not only a stand-alone device but also in combination with the Osstell IDx.

Mr. Ehinger: That combination will be a huge benefit to other big clinics where there are several clinicians working with their own patients but still within the same clinical setting. They can pool their data in Osstell Connect and then fine tune the dental implant treatments by benchmarking with your own clinic’s data and other clinicians’ data if you choose to. You can build this data set for years and see how the progression in treatments have developed and so on.

Mr. Horn: For clinicians that are new to this method and technology, the color coding, which essentially is an extract of all the scientific data that the ISQ scale is based on, will provide a guide as to when to load the implant.

Dr. Dagnelid: Seeing and comparing the data, especially for younger clinicians, builds a lot of confidence in terms of making the right decision at the right time with those risky patients that we all have now.

Looking ahead, what’s next for Osstell?

Mr. Ehinger: Osstell is now a part of a bigger company group, the W&H Group, which creates a fantastic range of opportunities, including developing more products that are integrated, in for example, surgical motors, as well as connecting more products to OsstellConnect. And of course, continue to focus on developing easy to use products and services that will help make dental implant treatments even safer and more predictable.
