IT and management consulting company Acando and its subsidiary Brickmakers have created a proof of concept for digitizing the initial step in the production of brake linings involving interactive 3D projection implemented based on augmented reality technology.

TMD Friction Services, a global leader in brake lining technologies, asked Acando and Brickmakers to create a proof of concept for demonstrating TMD innovations to management staff at its internal Global Operations Conference in April 2018.

The crucial first process step in the production of brake linings –  mixing and weighing the individual raw materials – was selected for the proof of concept. Currently, this process is being performed at the mixing plant by an industrial PC. The materials are then taken from the warehouse, where another PC also displays the production order. Hand-held scanners are used to identify the materials. The purpose of the proof of concept was to come up with a solution for making the interaction between the various devices more ergonomic and efficient. In addition, the process steps were to be simplified and accelerated and, simultaneously, information protected from unauthorized access.

The IT consultants and software developers at Acando and Brickmakers designed a storyboard following a joint requirements workshop. Using Microsoft HoloLens augmented reality glasses, the team developed the “Virtual Weighing” application to digitize the mixing and weighing process in the Unity 3D development environment. This projects an interactive 3D interface onto the various work areas, giving employees all the information they need to perform their work while keeping their hands free. Navigation is by modern voice control, eye focus and optical gestures. An integrated barcode scanner is used to select the correct raw material, allowing it to be identified unambiguously and effectively eliminating the risk of confusion. Interactive scales continuously display what materials in what quantities have been added to the mixture.

“With their “Virtual Weighing” solution, Acando and Brickmakers have fully met our expectations: The information remains protected from unauthorized access, while ergonomics and our employees’ mobility are maximized. The open communications and the agile and focused approach made the partnership very pleasant,” says Richard Diez-Holz, Head of Group Manufacturing IT at TMD Friction Services.
