In large, complex electrical supply systems, as are to be found in all large production plants, photovoltaic installations and on ships, a flexible solution for monitoring tasks is required. To be able to quickly and reliably locate insulation faults in these systems, permanently installed insulation fault location systems are often used. However, in order to locate insulation faults all the way down to a load, portable systems for insulation fault location, such as the EDS309x consisting of insulation fault locator, locating current injector and several measuring clamps, are also used. The EDS195PM insulation fault locator, a part of the insulation fault location system, has been further developed and its functions considerably facilitate insulation fault location.

The reliability of the electrical power supply in the machinery on ships is ensured by an unearthed system (IT system). IT systems have the major benefit of preventing an automatic shutdown of the power supply and therefore a failure of the entire system when a first insulation fault occurs. On the contrary, the system can continue to run without a shutdown and the insulation fault can be fixed at a later, more suitable time.

The portable EDS195PM locates insulation faults in a wide range of IT systems. These include, e.g. control circuits AC/DC 24 V to 230 V as well as main circuits AC/DC 24 V to 960 V. It is used in machinery on ships as well as on oil and gas drilling rigs.

On ships, often many kilometres of cable are installed in an IT system. Typically, large parts of the cable system are not directly accessible and cannot be visually inspected, which makes it increasingly difficult to determine the location of a fault. By means of the EDS195PM, various cable sections and distribution outlets can be inspected. An injected locating current is used to determine the fault at the outgoing circuits in the main and sub-distribution boards with a measuring clamp and assign it precisely to the outgoing circuit.

The EDS309x from Bender makes it possible to locate the insulation fault even during operation without having to switch off the loads and thus offers time and cost-saving insulation fault location that is also reliable. This significantly increases the availability of the electrical installation.
