In the EU, sales of packaging machines increased by 7% from 2016 to 2017. Sales of outer packaging machines, which account for the lion’s share, rose by 10%, filling and sealing machines fell by 3% and sales of cleaning machines increased disproportionately by 12%. The latter, however, only have a market share of 4%.

The market for outer packaging machines is in the hands of seven EU countries with Italy far at the top, followed by Germany with a constant market share of 18%.

Changes in the market shares of German packaging machines can be seen in filling and sealing machines as well as in cleaning machines.

Germany and Italy account for 82% of the market for filling and sealing machines. In this market Italy was able to improve its position slightly, Germany’s market share fell slightly from 60% to 59% in 2017.

In the growing market for cleaning machines, Germany’s market share fell drastically from 48% to 37%. Great Britain, on the other hand, more than tripled its market share from 4% to 17%.

The already high market shares of German packaging machines within the EU also explain why the export quota of packaging machines to the EU has not exceeded 35% in the last ten years. On the other hand, the export ratio of mechanical engineering to the EU as a whole was 49% recently.

The Quest report points out that winning export markets outside the EU is one of the special features of the sector. However, as another report shows, this has not been very successful so far.

This Quest sector report is available in English and Italian on https://www.quest-trendmagazine.com/en/machinery-industry/packaging-machines/market-shares-of-eu-countries-at-packaging-machines.html

The Quest report points out that official statistics do not speak of sales, but of value. This is the production valued at sales prices without value added tax. The difference to turnover is mainly due to changes in stocks, so it can be understood as turnover with great approximation.

The Quest Trend Magazine has published further industry analyses on the sectors building/glass/ceramic machines, printing and paper machines, conveyer, rubber/plastic machines, woodworking machines, food processing machines, robotics and automation, textile machines and machine tools.

These industry reports make it easier for engineering companies to place their experience in a long-term context and determine their position.
