In the past months, more than 2,500 banks in the U.S. have registered more than 2,800 Bank-Domains – that’s almost half of the banks in the country.

Their reasoning? The Bank-Domain, available exclusively for verified members of the global banking community, is the trusted, verified, and more secure option to support their online presence.Bank-Domans are incorporating robust security measures such as mandatory verification, email authentication, and strong encryption.

Single-character and two-letter names in .BANK are available since 2016. This is a great opportunity for all banks, which uses acronyms as their names or at the marketing.

Experts are sure about this: the new bank domain – officially supported by the American Bankers Association – will revolutionize the electronic banking and online business of banks worldwide.

Even the registration process of bank domains is secured thanks to more verification steps. Only banks that are authorized and controlled by the responsible supervisory authority are entitled to register bank domains.

Security experts examine each candidate for a Bank-Domain. ICANN Registrar Secura as Registrar will, of course, help and accompany its customers during the implementation of all steps of the registration and verification processes.

The choice of possible terms that a bank can use to register a bank domain is regulated by a strict "Name Policy". Possible are terms that correspond to the name of the bank and to registered or unregistered trademarks in use in the banking institution.

However, the rules also allow abbreviations ("Acronyms"), geographical additions and omissions. The geographical additions allow that in addition to the central (brand) name of a bank, also branches can be "branded" geographically with their own bank domain.

In addition to verifying the domain owner, high technical standards are required for active bank domains, in order to render bank domains a safe zone.

The operator and the users of a website with a bank address can therefore rely on a higher security than users of sites with other domain extensions. Scams like phishing become very hard if the bank is using a .bank domain.

The registry explains:

".BANK is your online stamp of trust, a simpler, quicker, more thorough way to educate employees and customers and protect them against cyberattacks. As a verified domain, bad actors simply cannot get a domain or email address that looks like yours to impersonate you and phish your employees and customers. In common domains (e.g., .com) it is possible for anyone to purchase a domain that looks nearly identical to yours using a variety of alphabets, misspellings, numbers in place of letters, or one that seems it could belong to your bank (e.g., [bankname]security.com). In common domains the security of your bank relies heavily on your employees’ and customers’ abilities to recognize and report these domains and emails. A .BANK domain permits you to operate in a gated community of banks, giving you a visual cue customers can recognize and a simple educational message ‚If it’s .BANK, it’s us.‘."

By the way, it is easy to forward your existing URL or domain to your new Bank-Domain.

The relationship between better ranking and the new top-level domains was proved by a study of Searchmetrics for Berlin-domains. Websites with Berlin-Domains frequently place better than websites with .de domains and .com domains in regional searches with Google. The result of the study by Searchmetrics can be summarized as follows:

"42% of searches show that .berlin domains rank better locally ."

The study of total sites in Houston shows that the results by Searchmetrics can be generalized to all new top level domains, including the Bank-Domains: It was proved that Google uses the domain endings of the New Top Level Domains as a key element for the assessment of domains. Total sites draws as a conclusion:

"It is clear that the new top-level domains improve the ranking in search engines. "

The bank domain will create more trust towards the bank among customers because of the high technical standards and the strict verification of domain owners. And confidence is the root of all banks. Banks with a banking domain will have a lasting competitive advantage. ICANN Registrar Secura is already accredited in the registry of bank domains.
