Globally oriented retailers must adopt a different approach than the industry pioneers of the 20th century if they want to expand. Which approach to take can be found in Loqate’s second annual International Retail Index published this month.

Guide to International Retail

Since the turn of the millennium, many retailers have expanded into new markets in other countries. This expansion is now typically digital, consisting of a well-ordered structure of “bricks & clicks” – that is, a combination of physical retail sales and an online shop.

Against this background, Loqate showcases 30 successful retailers in its retail index to show the industry what it takes to launch successfully in new markets and countries. The guide focuses on the key markets for international expansion (GB, USA, Benelux, DACH, and the Nordic countries) and is supported by exclusive data from Edge by Ascential in cooperation with Retail Week.

The trend goes toward digitalisation

The top 30 most successful retailers in the world are a combination of the biggest players in key sectors such as fashion, beauty, and electronics, the world’s leading retailers as well as small but fast-growing digitally oriented brands. The list, therefore, includes well-known names such as Amazon, IKEA, Apple, Gymshark, and Paul Valentine, which were analysed by Retail Week using various metrics.

The analyses clearly show that the trend in retail is moving toward digitalisation, making digital natives the global pacemakers. At the same time, it clearly shows that European retailers are more advanced than their North American counterparts when it comes to their global strategies. This is particularly evident with the two Swedish brands H&M and IKEA, which generate 90% of their sales outside their home country – also thanks to digitalisation and their online shops.

Retail index published

Loqate released the International Retail Index for 2019 this week. In it, readers will find not only valuable information on the most successful retailers in the global market but also best practices for their own expansion in other regions and countries.
