New driving and machine functions in the field of mobile machines demand the recording of an increasingly comprehensive number of physical parameters. For this reason, STW is to extend its range of sensor technology modules for mobile hydraulics with a new generation of inertial sensors which is being developed by a top-class team of experts at the Technologie Campus in Chemnitz. In the Chemnitz region, a technology network has been built up, including amongst others the Fraunhofer Institute ENAS in Chemnitz and the Fraunhofer IVI in Dresden, which are to play an increasingly significant role in future developments.

The current STW product portfolio in the field of sensors and measuring systems currently mainly comprises products centered around pressure measurement for mobile hydraulic applications.
However, there is also a consistently-increasing need for the recording and processing of other parameters, which amongst other things form the prerequisites for a higher degree of driving and machine functions in the field of mobile machines. In an initial step, STW is therefore extending its portfolio with a new generation of inertial sensors. These permit the realization of various control processes and represent a major component of machine safety.

After an intensive search, STW has been able to cater for the human resource requirements necessary for the purpose at the Technologie Campus in Chemnitz. At the beginning of September 2019 a third business location was opened there in addition to the locations in Berlin and Ulm and the STW Headquarter in Kaufbeuren, which was set up there in 1985. The main task of the experienced team of experts with many years of experience in the field of inertial measuring systems is initially the development of a new family of inclination, acceleration and gyroscope sensors. This includes all the necessary steps from the conceptualization and technical realization via the commissioning right up to the inspection of the pilot series. The series start for the entry-level products qualified for automotive applications has been scheduled for the first half-year of 2020 at the Kaufbeuren location.
Over and above this, the intention is to create bases for further new products, for example for environment and condition monitoring in mobile applications, in Chemnitz – and the region itself forms an outstanding basis for such work. It features a comprehensive technology network, including the Fraunhofer Institute ENAS in Chemnitz and the Fraunhofer IVI in Dresden.
