The High Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) of the United Nations is meeting in New York in July. The aim is to assess where the international community stands in implementing the 2030 Agenda with its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The high-level political UN body ensures the integration of the three dimensions of sustainability (economic, social and environmental) promotes the exchange of experience, makes recommendations and reviews the implementation of the commitments for sustainable development. For this purpose, the member states each draw up voluntary national reports. The aim is also to highlight the contribution made by local authorities to sustainable development.

The German Institute of Urban Affairs (Difu) prepared a report on behalf of the Bertelsmann Stiftung on the contribution of German municipalities to the implementation of the SDGs. It presents relevant programs, networks and good examples and contains extensive data analyses generated using the "SDG Indicators for Municipalities." The municipal umbrella organizations – supported by the Difu report – wrote a summary that was included in the German Voluntary National Review and will be presented at the United Nations High Level Political Forum (HLPF) in New York in July.
