The SKZ Plastics Centre has expanded its equipment with a state-of-the-art measuring system: the PermeH2O water vapour permeability tester. This new testing device allows the water vapour permeability of films to be determined even more precisely and under realistic conditions – a decisive quality criterion for applications in the food and beverage industry, pharmaceutical and medical technology, and electronics.
The PermeH2O operates in accordance with ISO 15106-2 and offers a wide range of tests:
• relative humidity between 5 and 95%,
• temperatures from 10 to 50 °C,
• nitrogen as carrier gas,
• sample sizes up to 50 cm² and thicknesses up to approx. 2.5 mm,
• two independent measuring chambers for parallel tests.
Reliable determination of water vapour permeability is of central importance for many industries: in food packaging, a controlled barrier function protects products from spoilage and loss of quality. In the pharmaceutical industry, suitable films ensure the effectiveness of sensitive active ingredients. And in electronics, an effective barrier prevents the ingress of moisture that could damage components.
‘The PermeH2O significantly expands our capabilities in the field of permeability testing. This will enable us to test films for a wide range of applications in future projects in accordance with standards and to check the quality and effects of changes in materials or processes,’ explains Franziska Eichhorn, Senior Engineer in the Spectroscopy Group at SKZ.
With the new PermeH2O, SKZ is not only expanding its own research and development expertise, but also offering testing as a service for customers who want to validate the quality and performance of their materials.
The SKZ is a climate protection company and a member of the Zuse Association. This is an association of independent, industry-related research institutions that pursue the goal of improving the performance and competitiveness of industry, especially SMEs, through innovation and networking.
